The Discraft Nuke was the most popular Distance Driver for Discraft and still is, but the Kong is creeping upon them. This ultra-thick 2.5 cm rim provides an extremely fast disc with a speed of 13. It’s so popular they make it in every plastic imaginable as they sell the 2nd most out of all their discs. (Buzzz is #1) Buyers beware, you need some power when throwing the Nuke as it’s not beginner-friendly.

Speed: 13   |   Glide :5   |   Turn: -1   |   Fade: 3   |   PDGA Approved

Why is the Discraft Nuke so popular? It was one of the very few high-speed drivers brought into the market that were not extremely overstable.  The name says it all, the Nuke is exactly what it feels like when you throw and see the massive distance you obtain. Japan might not like this disc much, but we know the USA does!

We questioned where the name actually came from, but when the Big Z plastic artwork came out it was obvious they were talking about the weapon.  In the great designs, it has a human head with a radioactive helmet on with a caution sign. It’s truly amazing. All of the other plastics have the normal clean look to them.  Note our favorite is the Titanium.

This disc has been so popular they make it in every stock plastic imaginable.  Normally the Elite X & Pro-D are not made in drivers except for the popular models.  It is good to add that they made two brothers for people looking for an even more overstable option and an undertstable option: Nuke SS & Nuke OS.

DISCRAFT Nuke IN Austin Turner’s BAG

So the big question, do any tour players bag the Discraft Nuke?  Obviously! A notable person on team Discraft is Austin Turner who bags two different distance drivers, the Force and Nuke. (In 2018)  While the Nuke is his go-to the Force just came out and have been playing around with it. He always uses the Nuke for forehand shots and he says he gets anywhere from 200-400+ on a good day.

    Dimensions

    • Height: 1.6 cm
    • Diameter: 21.2 cm
    • Rim Depth: 1.2 cm
    • Rim Width: 2.5 cm

It’s always said, but this disc just feels good in the hand.  A smaller type disc which is normal for distance drivers will get great momentum from the weight being on the outside of the rim. (Rim Width)

Discraft says this about the disc:

Longer drives are now as easy as pushing a button: NUKE™ delivers virtually effortless maximum distance for moderate to expert players. The wide, heavy rim and refined aerodynamic engineering give NUKE unparalleled velocity, while a 1.6 stability rating makes it more useful to a wider range of players. Seize the power!

A member of Team Discraft, John Anderson finds outstanding grip and distance when throwing the ESP Nuke.  He finds an easy ability to reach holes other discs cannot do for him and believes it has completed changed his game.  Another Team member, Brad Schick uses the Nuke for his go-to driver since release.  The predictability and speed allow for a great forehand disc as he bags 4-5 at a time for different stability.  While Brad enjoys most of the plastics, he gravitated towards the Big Z and got hooked immediately finding it impossible to throw anything else driver wise.

WHICH Discraft Nuke PLASTIC IS RIGHT FOR YOU

This question is almost impossible to answer, however, we will give our best answer we can.  For a beginner with not much power, the Pro-D and Elite-X would be the disc. It will wear fast, but as a beginner, you really want to find what disc fits you right and why to spend tons of money on a disc that might not suit you well.

For the Intermediate player with moderate arm strength, we recommend Titanium, ESP & Z FLX.  The reason behind this is they will be slightly more stable and if you're an intermediate player we expect you know what you're looking for in a disc.  The flexibility in these plastics are perfect and will last you 100+ rounds without seeing a change in the flight path.

Experts….are you really even reading this?  Well, maybe you are and probably would critique the heck out of these recommendations as were trying to simplify it the best we can.  Expert players will be out on the course daily and even playing possibly 2-5 times a day. You require a disc that can hold up to anything not only on the durability side but your arm speed as well.  This is why the Elite Z, Big Z, and Z FLX is where we stand on this answer.

REVIEW ON THE Discraft Nuke CONCLUSION

There are no true cookie-cutter answers, but we are trying to help educate the Disc Golf community in making better purchasing decisions.  We don’t want a beginner buying an extremely overstable disc, going out and throwing it with terrible results. Our company wants a beginner to be purchasing the correct disc, seeing excellent results and wanting to get more!

The Nuke is a great disc since it’s not overstable and not understable.  This means it works for every skill level. It is, however, a very high-speed driver meaning the very early beginners should steer away.   The Discraft Nuke will hold it’s own against any competitor out there and will give you an excellent start at beating your opponents.
