Discraft – The World Leader in Disc Sports
Located in Wixom, Michigan is Discraft who manufactures Disc Golf and Ultimate Frisbee equipment. It was founded by Jim Kenner and Gail McColl in 1979 and sells large quantity of discs to wholesalers across the world. One big advantage Discraft has is the USA Ultimate Championship Series has only approved the Discraft Ultimate disc to be played in competition.
The Launch of Star Wars Disc Golf has been highly anticipated and the wait is finally over! Discraft has broken down the barrier allowing for these amazing Star Wars Disc designs for the community. Let the force be with every Disc Golf player out there! They started with the only model being Buzzz, but within 2 months have increased to include the Force and Challenger using Z-Line and D-Line plastics. The Super Color - Bold strong colors that pop Prism Full Foil - Has slightly less bold colors, but a rainbow-like shine Sparkle Full Foil - Slightly less bold colors, but has glitter like specs are only made with the Buzzz currently.
We all know the force is strong with many, but Disc Golfers hold a stronger bond. Star Wars has been iconic since its release in 1977 and was rejuvenated in 1999-2005 by the release of Episode I, II and III. Disney purchased Star Wars and once again brought the force back with movies of Episode VII, VIII and soon to be IX!
Star Wars Disc Golf has been a struggle with licensing issues for manufacturers and honestly, the only way to obtain a Star Wars Discs was through a custom art designer. Well as of November 23rd, Discraft gave a public announcement where they informed everyone they struck a deal with Disney allowing them to start producing Star Wars designs on their discs.
One item we are already anticipating is exactly how Dynamic Discs struck a deal with Marvel, they slowly added additional molds into play with their art designs. Currently, (12/9/18) the only model Star Wars Discs are being produced is in the Discraft Buzzz model. While this is the most popular model for them, it only makes sense they did this. It’s sad to hear the news that Dynamic Disc did not strike a deal with Marvel in 2019 and will no longer be molding Marvel Discs.
The obvious play for Discraft is to start producing these amazing artworks they have on all their Discs to further incite Disc Golfers to buy more. I mean come on, how cool would it be to have your Luxury E3 Backpack completely full with 20 Star Wars Discs! I do not foresee Discraft releasing new molds anytime soon as they are struggling to keep up with demand. Potentially due to Christmas, but only time will tell. They have added the Challenger and Force, but the Paul McBeth discs have provided Star Wars a backseat.
I would assume if they keep selling extremely well, they will make a whole new line of plastic just for Star Wars; exactly what I was hoping for! This has been an even bigger success comparing it to Marvel with Dynamic Discs. While they did well, I’m wondering if it's the designs, the Star Wars following or just that Discraft is a bigger company than Dynamic Discs.
Paul McBeth has become an iconic figure in Disc Golf especially with his strong move going from Innova to Discraft. He was born on July 9th, 1990 in Huntington Beach, CA with a spouse, Hannah McBeth who he married in December 2018. Paul turned professional in 2008 and has many accomplishments throughout his career. He currently has 111 professional wins (as of 3/9/19)
Why did Paul McBeth switch to Discraft? Well nobody truly knows except for Paul himself and maybe Innova and Discraft. What people believe happened was he wanted to start his own brand and Innova did not want anything of it. Discraft being the #2 Disc Golf manufacturer with Latitude 64 (Trilogy) being on their heels had no issues bringing him in and bring his ideas to light.
It has finally occurred, Discraft officially signed Paul McBeth and he’s no longer apart of Innova Discs. He is the 4x World Champion and Discraft is kicking off 2019 with 4 exciting signature discs from the man himself!
1. ESP BUZZZ
The #1 seller for Discraft and very close to the number 1 seller for all Mid-Range discs in Disc Golf. No question in anyone’s mind one of the Paul McBeth Signature Series discs were going to be the Buzz. Many consider it the best disc you can buy hands down no matter Distance, Fairway, Mid or Putter. The reliable, straight flight path Mid-Range you can depend on consistently. You can put all your might into the Buzzz and it will fly at any line you put on it.
The ESP plastic line is a redesign with advanced plastic technology. It’s durable with improved strength, tackier grip and every disc have some sort of cool swirly looking design/dye. It’s compared to Innova’s Star plastic but has some very nice additions. We all wondered what type of plastic Paul McBeth would choose for the Buzz since it was obviously going to be one of the discs in his bag!
2. Elite-Z ZONE
Were pretty sure for this Paul McBeth Signature Series Z-Line Zone will be used for his forehand shots. The Zone is perfect for this type of throw due to its low profile and overstable flight characteristics. It holds lines without flipping better than any disc on the market. Perfect for long approach shots, and delivers predictable putting in any weather conditions Mother Nature throws at us. The glide is excellent it’s amazing a small flick of the wrist and the disc will seem to fly for days.
The Z-Line is normally translucent so you can see thru the disc giving a nice touch. It has the maximum durability on the market for disc quality, but you lose a little grip to obtain this quality. It’s very sturdy and can withstand many types of beatings which also helps it cut through the wind. It’s compared to the popular Innova Champion plastic. Paul will be sure to have a blast with his new Signature Series Zone.
Star Wars just launched right at the end of 2018, but did the signing of Paul McBeth come overshadowed? Which was a bigger move for Discraft? We feel Paul will grow the sport greater than Star Wars, but it’s pretty even. All that because the Paul McBeth Signature Series Z Force is one of the discs! The Force be with him! When throwing for max distance, this should be your go-to disc of choice. It’s currently Discraft’s fastest overstable distance driver. It has a wide rim with amazing glide providing some next level distance for Disc Golf players. Do note, it’s intended for experienced players with massive arm strength.
Another Z-Line plastic for the Signature Series and for good reason. Paul loves to play disc golf and the amount of punishment we give our discs, he needs all the durability in the world! He pushes the limits when playing every time. Most of the time, it works out for him, but there are those occasions….(I have them a lot more) you need the durability more than ever.
Ah, another Distance Driver that’s closer to a controlled driver. The Undertaker is a versatile disc that’s a workhorse for many players. It flies straight for an average Disc Golf player, but if you have a massive arm like Paul McBeth, the Undertaker has an excellent trait, it won’t become flippy. The perfect reason why Paul will surely have the disc in his bag using it for a controlled drive.
This disc is being molded in the TI plastic, Titanium Line. It’s an improved polymer-based composite with additives made by chemists. It provides great durability, which we already told you why everyone needs that. It provides improved strength, better grip than the Z-Line. This plastic is newer and hasn’t caught on for Disc Golf players, but time will surely help as it’s an impressive addition.
Paul McBeth Specific Discs
He has been given the ability to forge his own line-up of discs. As of right now he has a Distance Driver - Zeus, Fairway Driver - Anax, and the very first disc, Putter - Luna.
The Discraft Tour Team has been on fire with Paul McBeth leading the way winning his first 2019 tournament at Waco Annual Charity Open presented by Dynamic Discs. The week after tossed another Tier A win and currently to date (5/9/19) has 5 wins under himself. These Discraft Discs are doing well for him! On the Discraft Elite Team in 2019 are happy to announce their Signature ESP Tour Series Discs!
Discraft currently has (48) different molds as of 4/1/19 and they are divided up into 4 main categories: (10) Putters, (9) Mid Range, (10) Fairway Drivers and (19) Distance Drivers. All these discs have different flight characteristics giving Disc Golf players the necessary equipment to achieve excellent results.
The company currently has a total of (8) different plastics:
- TI – The newest that has the grip of ESP and durability of Z
- Z FLX – Another newer plastic only offered in a select amount of molds, but people are assuming it will replace the ESP FLX
- ESP FLX – Another limited run of disc use this plastic that has ESP durability, but is very flexible
- ESP – High durability and very grippy, but not translucent
- Elite Z – Very high durability and semi-translucent discs that are stiff. They are normally brighter colors and are close to Innova’s Champion plastic
- Z-Lite – Elite Z plastic, but in lighter weights
- Elite X – A Very Grippy plastic, but does not wear well
- Pro D – Cheapest plastic Discraft offers and also the least durable, but it provides excellent grip
Discraft has always been active in the Disc Golf Tour and played a major part in the Professional division, but in 2019, they made the gigantic leap to acquire the free agent of a lifetime. The Michael Jordan or Lebron James of basketball; The Tom Brady of Football; they acquired Paul McBeth to be a part of the Discraft team.
Not only did Paul McBeth join Discraft, but he has started his own personal line of discs that are being manufactured by Discraft. Currently as of 4/1/2019 there are two discs, the Luna which has been released as the Proto Putter and now is available as the Luna First Run. The 2nd disc is still only in the prototype phase the Discraft Kong, also known as the Proto Driver. It hasn’t been said if there will be additional discs made on Paul McBeth’s line, but the sell through for the first two discs have been through the roof! We can only hope Discraft finds it in their best interest to help Paul McBeth with more success and provide the Disc Golf community with more pure gems.
